Since it wraps up pretty quickly, the three of us come up with a game about trains and Francis Schaffer on the fly. Then we talk a bunch about what’s wrong with David. Lastly, Ben has a last word at the last.

We kick things off with silly discussion about some CCM artists: their names and their voices. After that, for production reasons, we have no follow up. We tried. We really did. But we had nothing. At least we also tried to make it funny. Again, we really tried.

Our main discussion is a sort of smorgasbord of topics related to photography. We’d like to think everyone wants to take nice pictures of something at some point in their life—pictures of their pets, children, nieces, nephews, or HelloFresh meals. So David offers some tips on using your phone to take photos, as well as some tips on getting started as a professional photographer. For some reason Jim thought that last topic would be interesting enough to get started. Thankfully, a lot of the advice applies to any freelancing field in some way, so you can take comfort in that.

118: Punch the Wicked in the Jaw

This episode is about The Lord of the Rings, VFX, and Psalm-singing. If that seems weird to you, you’re probably new. Anyway, the show is mostly about LOTR and VFX up until the 43 minute mark. At the 43 minute mark, we discuss the Psalms, but the discussion arises out of Jim’s appearance on episode 24 of The Balm in Gilead Podcast—a podcast about music, especially Christian music, and often even more especially Christian worship music. While it’s not strictly required, listeners may find it helpful to listen to that episode before listening to the latter part of our episode.

Anyway, David talked a great deal in this episode, which is why for the next two episodes, David will simply be asking Jim questions. Not good questions, just “Why?” over and over again.

To start, David shows off how unfamiliar him is with history and figures of the same. It's really not good, but he made a Michael Jordan joke so Jim says that makes up for it.

In follow up we reveal that neither of us is a psychologist, and that we are in fact quite dumb. There is no doubt whatever about that. Dumb as door-nails. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dumb about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a roofing nail as the dumbest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that we are as dumb as door-nails. This must be distinctly understood, or you might actually believe the rest of the things we relate.

Anyway, for our main topic, we discuss something relevant again. Not for the sake of relevancy, a thing for which we almost never strive. But because the issue has been on our minds a lot lately (due to its virtual unavoidability and not any piety within us, sad to say) and we thought encouraging discussion of said issue would be of benefit. Anyway, the topic. The topic is privilege and compassion. After listening to this, we're expecting to be hung as piñatas at some poor candy-less conservatives birthday party.

Anyway, our main topic is the inverse of the law of the excluded middle. It’s the law of the exclusive middle. We discuss why the middle of the road position is often the most appealing, why it has a certain rhetorical persuasiveness, and David references Merlin Mann’s “turns out” concept to illustrate part of why this might be. 79: Fat, Sassy Calvinists

For our main topic, we discuss when we’re tempted to lie. We talk about the temptation to lie when we are trying to persuade people, specifically. We each share some stories of when we’ve done this and what’s made us decide we need to do it less. We also talk about why it’s important, when you’re with like-minded people, not to just pick bad examples of the other side, or outright lie about them while everyone cheers and shouts, “David! David! David!” and then they pour gatorade on your head, but it’s sugar free, so it’s not sticky afterwards. Then they bring out a white robe for you to wear and—

Oh, man. This is an episode, alright. We kick things off with a voicemail for Bill, and somehow things only manage to go downhill from there.

Our special guest is Ben Robin, again. It might be getting less special. Anyway, he receives an honor we typically reserve for no one at all: he joins us for our follow up segment. Follow up really is a two man job, though, so the segment smacks of too many chefs in the dining area. Nevertheless, we carry on.

Our main topic is Spiritual Gifts. And oh, man—it sure was a thing. Everyone was feeling fighty, and David didn’t have his emotion chip turned on—so empathy, as they say, was lacking. Much like Presbyterian theology, our whiskey journey takes us from Scotland to America. We begin by tasting some Buffalo Trace. Jim seemed insistent that we have at least some amount of alcohol in our system before he let David do follow up.

Remember back when we were funny? Neither do we. Remember back when we did more parody ads and fewer weird skits? Pepperidge Farm remembers. And so do we. That’s why we start things off with a weird skit and an old school parody ad. Because when it comes to schools, there are not schools which are like those which are old.

Anyway, David might be back with the show—in an engaged sort of manner. He has lots of follow up, which, oddly, Jim was excited about. Absence makes the heart grow forgetful. We begin with a parody of a well-beloved podcast. You'll have to hear it to understand—then you'll have to unheard it to recover. Next we dive into followup, where Jim apologizes for mispronouncing “data,” and David apologizes for letting Jim turn last episode into kind of an ad for a web app that David hasn't even shipped yet. But it's no one’s fault. Remember that.

Inspired by David’s side-hustlin’ eryday, Jim has decided that he would like his own side with which to hustle. This lead to a series of shenanigans, not the least of which is Jim taking a bunch of free personality and aptitude tests, probably accidentally signing over his soul to Russia in the process. We discuss how to find a career/side-hustle and even dive a little bit into the topic of vocation.
